Assize of bread and ale

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The English Assize of Bread and Ale , which was enacted in the 13th century, is one of the earliest regulations for food control and, in its design, an important source of food culture in the Middle Ages . For England this decree is the first regulation regarding the production and sale of food.

It regulates in detail which prices bakers and brewers were allowed to take depending on the price of grain. Its exact time of creation is controversial. But it is generally Heinrich III. and would have been written in 1266 and 1267.

The law was not repealed until 1863.
