Association for the Study of Modern Italy

The Association for the Study of Modern Italy (ASMI) is the most important British association of scholars (historians, political and social scientists, art historians, economists, and cultural and film scholars) who have Italy as their research focus.

The ASMI was founded in 1982 by Christopher Seton-Watson of the University of Oxford , the famous historian of the liberal Italian state. Every year ASMI organizes a series of events such as lectures, seminars, a summer school for doctoral students and an international annual conference. The topics of the previous annual meetings have been emotions, regionalism, the Italian crisis, war and migration. The ASMI also awards prizes and research grants. Membership is open to all Italy experts from around the world.

Modern Italy

Modern Italy is the professional journal of ASMI and is published as one of the world's leading magazines on Italy by Cambridge University Press. Modern Italy is published four times a year and features peer-reviewed articles on ASMI's interdisciplinary research fields.

The ASMI is controlled by a scientific advisory board elected by the members, which consists of a chairman, a secretary and a treasurer as well as other scientists. It has been chaired by leading historians such as Denis Mack Smith, John F. Pollard, Russell King, David Forgacs, Perry Willson and Christopher Duggan. The current chairman is Lucy Riall .
