Atomic Energy of Canada Limited ( AECL ) is a Canadian state-owned company and the largest nuclear research center in the country. As a Crown Corporation , it is overseen by Natural Resources Canada . The company's headquarters are in Chalk River Laboratories , Ontario . The company was founded in 1952 and employs around 3,200 people. It researches and develops new nuclear technologies for peaceful purposes, involving physics, metallurgy, chemistry, biology and engineering.
The company works with other national and international partners, including universities, various Canadian government research institutions, private research centers and international agencies such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). AECL developed the CANDU reactor technology and sold it worldwide until October 2011. By 2011, several power plants were built in India , South Korea , Argentina , Romania and the People's Republic of China . In 2011, the company transferred the patent rights for its technology to the Canadian energy company SNC Lavalin . AECL is a member of the World Nuclear Association .
