Attila József Prize
The Attila József Prize (József Attila-díj) is a Hungarian literary prize . It was established as a state prize in communist Hungary in 1950 . It is named after the Hungarian poet Attila József (1905–1937).
Before the Second World War, Franz Ferdinand Baumgarten founded the Baumgarten Prize in 1923 , which was considered an important Hungarian literary prize in Hungary under the Horthy regime and was awarded from 1929 to 1944 and after the end of the war from 1946 until 1949. The bourgeois namesake of Jewish origin with the German name was not considered exemplary by the Hungarian Communist Party. Hence the name was given to Attila József , who died in 1937 and was also close to the Communist Party.
The price was retained after the political turnaround in Hungary in 1989 and was not touched in the various right-wing conservative governments of Viktor Orbán , while József's statue in Budapest in 2011 has already been put up for discussion by the political right in Hungary.
The prize is awarded annually in spring in several literary categories. The winners are named by a board of trustees. There are many winners who have received the award several times. The prize includes a bronze plaque with the poet's likeness and a (modest) prize money of 200,000 forints (as of 2011). The winners will be reported in the Hungarian press and in the press in neighboring European countries. The awarding of the prize is also used by publishers in marketing their authors. Another prestigious cultural prize in Hungary is the Kossuth Prize , which is also awarded to writers.
