A set of attributes is in the grammar a subordinate clause , the function of an attribute has (in a narrow sense), so by a noun depends noun or a group (noun phrase).

Forms of Attribute Sets

Relative clauses

A common case of attribute clauses are relative clauses , but not all relative clauses are attributes (they also occur as free or as advanced relative clauses ).

Examples
  • “Julian stood for a long time on the wooden bridge that led from the country road to the village. "(" Which led from the country road to the village "is the attribute sentence that refers to" the wooden bridge ".)
  • "The place where I was born is on the seashore where the Rhine flows out."
  • “He's amazed at the way she pulls out of the affair. "(" How she pulls herself out of the affair "is a relative clause with a relative adverb , which depends on" type ").

Conjunctive and interrogative sentences

Depending on the meaning of a noun, content clauses can also depend on it, just as they appear as a supplement to meaning-like verbs:

Examples
  • "The claim that the sun orbits the earth is only supported by very few people." (Cf.: "Few people claim that ...").
  • "The question why he was applying for the position could not be answered convincingly." (Cf.: "They asked him why ...")

Second verb attribute sentences

So-called uninitiated subordinate clauses, i.e. subordinate clauses with a second position in the verb , can also appear as attributes after certain nouns:

example
  • "The claim that all attribute clauses have verb endings is not correct."

Position in the sentence

A special feature of attribute sentences is that, in contrast to most other attributes, they can very easily be moved to the end of the sentence (into the subsequent field ) - this separates them from their reference word:

example
  • "A relative clause can from the noun are separated, to which it relates. "
