The Augustinian Monastery (also New Monastery ) was a monastery of the Augustinian hermits in Zerbst in Anhalt from the 14th to the 16th century.

location

The Augustinian monastery was located in the northwest of the medieval city on the city wall next to the Nikolaikirche . Parts of the monastery buildings in the cloister are still preserved.

history

In 1390 the Augustinian monastery in Magdeburg was assigned a plot of land for the construction of a monastery by the city council. The Nikolaikirche was handed over by the Bartholomäistift . In 1396 the monastery was first mentioned as existing.

In 1425 a provincial chapter of the order province of Saxony-Thuringia took place there. In 1485 the city council complained to the Pope about the poor condition of the city's monasteries, and in 1491 the provincial of the order sent a delegation to visit the monastery.

The monastery in Zerbst did not join the observance movement in 1507 and in 1518 housed a chapter of the German Congregation of Non-Observants. In 1522 there were unrest in the Nikolaikirche in Zerbst due to citizens influenced by Reformation ideas. Luther then came to town, preached once in the Augustinian monastery and then three times to the population. In the period that followed, the monastery's income fell, causing some monks to leave the monastery for economic reasons. In 1525 the remaining six brothers sold the monastery to the city council and shared the proceeds.

A hospital had already been set up there in 1526, which burned down in 1556. It was rebuilt. The remaining building remains were badly damaged in 1945, but some parts of the cloister have been preserved.
