Avaaz is an international social movement that was founded in 2007 by the Canadian-British political and economic scientist Ricken Patel and mainly operates online activism and cyber activism via the Internet . The non-profit organization is exempt from income tax in the United States as a 501 (c) organization under Article 501 (c) Item 4 of the Internal Revenue Code . Via an internet-based participation and voting platform, Avaaz organizes global political campaigns , predominantly in the areas of climate change , human rights , animal welfare , the fight against corruption , poverty and violent conflicts or wars . The most common form of action is the online petition .

The name Avaaz comes from the Persian wordآواز āwāz , which means "voice", "sound" or "song" - it was u. a. also into Hindi / Urdu (आवाज़ āvāz or آواز āwāz ) borrowed. Avaaz's stated goal is to "work together to bridge the gap between the world we have and the world most people everywhere want." While the organization was founded in New York , the actual campaign work is done by activists from different countries.

Avaaz works in 15 languages and claims to have more than 48 million members in 194 countries, including those who signed the petitions. According to the British daily The Guardian , Avaaz has become "the world's largest and most influential network for online activists" in just five years.

Foundation and development

The British-Canadian activist Ricken Patel is the managing director and co-founder of Avaaz. Patel studied Politics, Philosophy and Economics (Politics, Philosophy, Economics, PPE) at Balliol College of Oxford University . He earned a Masters degree in Public Policy from Harvard University. He worked for the International Crisis Group worldwide, including in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Sudan and Afghanistan. According to his own statements, there he “learned how to bring insurgents to the negotiating table, monitor elections (unnoticed), restore the population's trust in formerly corrupt political systems and notice when foreign forces have been manipulated”. He returned to the US and volunteered for MoveOn.org where he learned to use internet tools for activism.

Patel founded Avaaz in 2007, together with former Democratic Congressman for Virginia Tom Perriello , the Australian entrepreneur David Madden, the co-founder of Purpose.com Paris Jeremy Heiman, Andrea Woodhouse, Tom Pravda and Eli, the managing director of MoveOn , a front organization of the US Democrats .

Other co-founding organizations were the New York-based non-profit Res Publica , which was dedicated to promoting good governance and civic engagement, the progressive campaign organization MoveOn.org from the USA, the American-Canadian union Service Employees International Union and the left-wing Australian citizens' movement GetUp! .

According to Avaaz, almost 48 million people from all officially recognized countries in the world have signed petitions from Avaaz (as of July 22, 2018). Avaaz refers to these signatories or email subscribers as "Members".

Avaaz is also targeting a European audience.

financing

In the early stages, Avaaz received grants from organizations such as Res Publica , MoveOn.org , George Soros ' Open Society Foundations, and the North American service union SEIU.

Since 2009 Avaaz has been financed exclusively by its members, with no one allowed to donate more than € 5,000.

To ensure its independence, Avaaz assures that it will not accept any donations from governments or corporations. While the organization was financed by donations from partner organizations and other charitable organizations at the time it was founded, almost 90% of its budget today is made up of small online donations. Avaaz does not provide any further details. The annual expenditure shares are listed in a financial report. In 2010, the foundation donated almost US $ 1.8 million of its income of over US $ 5.6 million for humanitarian purposes.

structure

In 2011 Avaaz had 52 permanent employees and other volunteers.

aims

Avaaz wants to connect as many people as possible in order to influence international issues on their behalf. The range of topics is relatively large: it ranges from human rights and environmental protection to preventing or ending wars. Avaaz strives to enforce pressing issues for which the population is already interested or even a majority against political leaders - hence the name "Avaaz": the organization wants to give the citizens a "voice". Avaaz does not engage in investigative journalism to put very unknown topics on the political agenda, for which the organization is sometimes criticized.

Avaaz also collects donations for satellite Internet modems that help bypass information barriers in crisis areas and thus give the people more power over dictators (see below). Additional donations are used to place advertisements on a controversial topic, also to draw attention to grievances.

The coordination is done by activists, most of whom are permanent employees and come from Argentina , Brazil , Germany , Great Britain , India , Switzerland , the USA and other countries. Communication takes place via email, Skype and in person during joint meetings. Campaign proposals come from subscribers and employees. If a proposal is found to be very important, test e-mails are first sent out so that we can assess the response.

Working method

"Quickly save the world" global climate demo organized by Avaaz, here in Berlin (September 21, 2014)

The petitions are Avaaz's best known tool. Samples of 10,000 members are used to determine which campaigns find support. In this case, the campaign will be launched with a larger group of members.

As part of such a petition, circular e-mails requesting support are sent to all e-mail subscribers in a region or to all subscribers worldwide. The votes collected are often in the millions and are given as media-effective as possible to those responsible from politics in order to increase public pressure and to give more weight to the opinion of the signatories.

Public pressure on those in charge of politics is also to be generated by emailing subscribers to encourage them to call or write to their government officials personally and explain to them how important a topic is to them. In some regions offline protests are also organized, so "classic" demonstrations. Compared to the German campaign network Campact , offline activities only represent a very small part of the activity.

activities

Since its inception in 2007, Avaaz has run hundreds of global and national campaigns. Avaaz members have, for example, used for corruption combat in India, Italy and Brazil, to protect the world's oceans, rain forests and endangered species, the freedom of the Internet and the media to ensure and the democratic spirit during the uprisings of the Arab Spring to support. In addition to signature campaigns, members can also get involved with email campaigns, phone calls or campaigns on Facebook and Twitter, protests and donations. Past and current campaigns include:

Donations to those affected by humanitarian disasters

In order to support affected people in humanitarian disasters, Avaaz collects donations from its subscribers, which are intended for a specified mission.

Food, medical care and reconstruction in Haiti

Following the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Avaaz raised over $ 1.3 million in donations from thousands of members for emergency care and reconstruction. The donations went to international organizations such as actionid Viva Rio and Partners in Health and Haitian organizations such as COZPAM, CODAB and Zamni Lasante, which campaigned on site.

As part of the campaign, 450,000 subscribers signed a petition successfully calling on G8 finance ministers, and thus the rich countries, to grant Haiti debt relief for more than 1 billion US dollars.

Reconstruction after the flood disaster in Pakistan

Avaaz supported the homeless and the reconstruction of Pakistan with a donation of US $ 600,000. In addition, over 140,000 votes were collected calling on the International Monetary Fund and Pakistan's creditors to “grant a two-year interest-free deferred payment - as a first step towards the complete cancellation of its unjust debts” and help not in the form of loans, but as grants, i.e. donations to grant.

Support for citizen journalists in the Middle East

An Avaaz team works closely with the democracy movements in Syria, Yemen, Libya and other countries. It provides them with telephones and satellite internet modems, advises them on communication technology and networks them with media channels. The so-called “citizen journalists” in the crisis states thus have the opportunity to bypass information barriers and to send eyewitness reports about the revolutions, but also about abuse, to the world public.

The eyewitness reports are published once or twice a day on a Avaaz website in English and are also sent to a list of well-known media with around 200 subscribers in Germany.

Some media use video interviews provided by Avaaz, in which victims such as civil rights activists or security forces report on the unrest and repression.

Petitions

As a rule, all subscribers in some language regions or worldwide all subscribers are invited by email to participate in a petition and to disseminate the petition. The e-mails describe the issue and show what can be done: collect signatures, call your own government, take part in demonstrations, boycott something, donate or the like. At the end of every e-mail there is a compilation of renowned sources from which members can find out more about the topic. A more recent Avaaz move is to promote votes on Facebook. The principle is similar: here, too, the addressees are asked to find out more, sign and forward the petition to as many friends and acquaintances as possible.

Once a large number of votes have come together on a topic, Avaaz tries to pass them on to those responsible in politics in a media-effective manner. Often these handovers are connected with actions that illustrate the problem and provide pictures to the press.

2007

Iraq - Petition and demonstrations for more self-determination for Iraqis

In the very first action in 2007, Avaaz called with a signature campaign against a military escalation and troop reinforcement in Iraq and a peaceful protest march in Washington DC. Avaaz called in the petition to "stop the military escalation in Iraq" and demanded "a diplomatic solution and an effective plan to end the Iraq war". The protest went hand in hand with the publication of a new plan to end the war and preserve Iraq's oil reserves for the Iraqi people.

In a later campaign, Avaaz called for the "Oil Klaus" to stop in Iraq. The foundation called on politicians around the world to support "Iraq's right to its own oil and its own future". Avaaz denounced the attempt by the Bush administration and multinational oil companies to force the Iraqi parliament to hand over rights to oil profits to international, especially US-American companies.

In March, Avaaz members worked together for a just and peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In support of this goal, Avaaz created a video entitled "Stop the Clash of Civilizations", which won the 2007 YouTube award in the "Politics" category and in 9 different language versions over 2.5 million Times was viewed.

At the G8 summit in Heiligendamm in June 2007, Avaaz protested against the blockade by US government representatives and the lack of support for global climate protection measures. Avaaz presented an online petition signed by 400,000 people from 193 countries.

For the UN climate conference in Bali in December 2007, Avaaz organized a global day of action in around 100 countries. 550,000 signatories asked the conference participants to make concrete climate agreements. Avaaz coordinated the handover of a climate petition with 2.6 million signatures from a dozen environmental organizations to the conference. After dramatic negotiations, a partial success for climate protection was achieved in Bali.

Avaaz co-organized the Global Day of Action For Burma on October 6, 2007, along with the Burma Campaign UK, Amnesty International and other organizations. Avaaz collected over 800,000 signatures for a petition to the UN Security Council and Chinese President Hu Jintao , an important supporter of the Burmese regime, to avert violence against anti-government protesters in Burma and to support reconciliation and democratization . The petition was handed over to Britain's then Prime Minister Gordon Brown on October 15, 2007 .

2008

In March 2008, Avaaz launched another global petition to China's President Hu Jintao . This demanded the observance of human rights in Tibet and the opening of a dialogue with the Dalai Lama . The petition reached a million signatures within a week, and later 1.5 million, making it the largest online petition in history at the time. The petition was handed over to Chinese consulates and embassies on March 31, 2008.

2009

The petition for a successful 2009 climate conference in Copenhagen reached 11 million signatures. On the first day, over 300,000 supporters worldwide took part in the campaign to support the WikiLeaks disclosure platform . Avaaz also supports a demand that is central to Attac for better legal regulation of the global financial markets, since the financial crisis is destroying the livelihoods of the poorest in many countries.

USA - Campaign to close Guantanamo

The call for US President Barack Obama to keep his election promises and close the prison camps on Guantanamo Bay was signed by 82,000 subscribers in 2009. This petition was combined with an advertising campaign aimed at highlighting human rights and other problems associated with the prison camps (see section “Agenda setting outside the Avaaz network”).

2010

Votes for a new anti-corruption law in Brazil

A little over 2 million signatories, most of them from Brazil, are campaigning for a new anti-corruption law that will make it impossible for people convicted of serious crimes to run for public office. The popular initiative “Ficha Limpa” (clean slate) was thus strongly supported by Avaaz. In order to increase the pressure, those responsible were called and written to thousands of times, Avaaz organized a demonstration, which was well received by the media, at which a “clean congress” was advertised with soap and water. In May 2010 the Brazilian Congress voted unanimously to pass the anti-corruption law.

2011

Establishment of a 'no-fly zone' over Libya

During the civil war in Libya in 2011 , Avaaz supported the demands of insurgents and western governments for a no-fly zone over the country with a petition to the UN Security Council. In total, almost 828,000 people signed the petition. In individual media and political blogs , the petition was criticized with regard to the dangers of such an intervention . The UN Security Council finally voted for the establishment of the no-fly zone.

Anti-corruption campaign in India

In March 2011, Gandhist activist Anna Hazare announced that he would fast to the death if the government did not agree to allow civil society to propose a new, powerful anti-corruption law. In 36 hours, 500,000 Indians signed the Avaaz petition to support Hazare's demands. Four days later, India's government signed a written draft of Hazare's demands.

Great Britain - Campaign against Murdoch's media power

Rupert Murdoch's media power has long been a political issue in the UK. Journalists from the tabloid News of the World , which is part of Murdoch's News Corporation , are said to have wiretapped calls from hundreds of parliamentarians and accessed their mailboxes. The ex-editor-in-chief of the paper then became head of communications for the Tories. In 2011 he had to resign as head of communications because of the wiretapping scandal ; Murdoch discontinued the newspaper on July 10, 2011.
Avaaz began a campaign against Murdoch in 2011. Avaaz ran ads, organized public handicaps, made phone calls and petitions to denounce and curtail Murdoch's media power, including a. with the aim of revoking licenses.

Brazil - Campaign against the construction of the Belo Monte dam

As part of this campaign against the Belo Monte hydropower plant , members of local tribes handed over 600,000 petition signatures . Avaaz had collected this through email calls in Brazil and around the world.

For an end to the war on drugs

In May 2011, over 600,000 signatures were collected within a week for a petition addressed to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and other heads of state. The petition called for an end to the ' War on Drugs ' and a global reform of drug policy.

Middle East - Signatures for the establishment of a Palestinian state

In August 2011, Avaaz started a broad-based campaign to petition the United Nations Security Council to approve the Palestinian application for membership in the United Nations and thus its recognition as an independent state. The US in particular is asked to agree in the petition, as their veto in particular is feared. After the failed peace negotiations, the two-state solution is described as the most promising path to peace. As part of the campaign, Avaaz released a video on the conflict in the Middle East calling for the petition to be signed.

2012

In 2012 Avaaz campaigned to repel attacks on internet freedom ( ACTA in Europe and SOPA in the US), advocated the EU and the United Nations for the recognition of a Palestinian state, an end to fossil subsidies Fuels called for at the Rio + 20 summit , and citizen journalists in Syria supported bringing the events from the country to global media.

  • In February, almost three million Avaaz members worldwide signed a petition against ACTA , a controversial multilateral trade agreement under international law that would have affected the freedom to use the Internet. Avaaz handed the petition to the EU Parliament on February 28th, which rejected the agreement in the summer of that year.
  • Working with other organizations like DemandProgress, 3 million members worldwide signed a petition against SOPA , a law that would have allowed the US government to shut down websites like YouTube or WikiLeaks . The joint efforts of the various groups have stopped the proposal for the time being.
  • In the run-up to the Rio + 20 summit, Avaaz launched a campaign to end government subsidies of $ 1 trillion annually to fossil fuels. The petition was handed over together with the climate movement 350.org with a media campaign on the beach in Rio de Janeiro .
  • Avaaz has also raised funds to support lawsuits filed by Guatemalan citizens against a Canadian mining company.
  • In Germany, Avaaz collected more than 100,000 signatures against bribery in German politics at the end of 2012 and handed them over to the chairman of the legal committee in the Bundestag, Siegfried Kauder . Kauder, one of the strongest opponents of stricter laws against the bribery of parliamentarians, then worked with other parties in the legal committee to draft a law to punish the bribery of parliamentarians more severely and thus to ratify the United Nations Convention against Corruption.
  • In 2012 Avaaz introduced a new platform for citizen petitions. Each member can start their own petition on the platform and collect support for it. The most successful German-speaking citizens' petitions to date have called for an end to poaching in the Pendjari National Park in Benin with 78,000 signatures, stricter laws against sexual abuse in Germany with 64,000 signatures, the rescue of two Afghan girls from deportation with 19,000 signatures, and an end to corruption in Austria Carinthia, with almost 20,000 signatories.
  • NetzwerkB's petition, supported by Avaaz, called for the statute of limitations for sexual offenses in civil and criminal law to be lifted . The petition was refused by the Petitions Committee of the German Bundestag and the President of the Bundestag Norbert Lammert . It was presented to Ralf Stegner , SPD, on November 21, 2012 with the request to pass it on.

2013

  • As of June 12, 2013, over 1,000,000 members worldwide have voted for the immediate termination of the PRISM surveillance program and for Edward Snowden to be viewed as a whistleblower in the interests of the people and therefore not to be treated as a criminal.

2015

  • After calling for a 'no-fly zone' over Libya, Avaaz has also been calling for such an intervention in the civil war in Syria since 2015 . The petition is addressed to US President Obama , Turkish President Erdoğan , President Hollande , Prime Minister Cameron and other leaders. More than 1.6 million people have signed the petition. However, the call was occasionally criticized in political blogs as one-sided and the demand for military intervention as dangerous. The Avaaz team was forced to comment on its website defending the petition due to contradictions against the petition within the network and even user withdrawals.

2016

  • Avaaz has been calling for a no-fly zone again since 2016, this time specifically over the Syrian city of Aleppo . The Avaaz team was again forced to comment on its website defending the petition due to user withdrawals.

Agenda setting outside the Avaaz network

In order to draw attention to a problem and get people to act, Avaaz also places advertisements as part of some campaigns and produces videos such as "Clash of Cultures" or "Middle East peace - the real story."

Poster ads against the prison camp on Guantanamo Bay

In 2009, as part of an anti-Guantanamo campaign, the collected donations were used to finance posters in the Washington Metro , which show Osama bin Laden in a T-shirt with the imprint "I love Guantanamo". Avaaz said it wanted to remind decision-makers that "torture is illegal and immoral, and is also used as an important argument to recruit new terrorists for bin Laden and the al-Qaida network."

Video for binding climate protection contracts

In order to fight against the influence of the petroleum lobby on binding climate protection agreements in Washington in 2009, Avaaz created a video that is designed like an ExxonMobil advertising campaign . In this "advertisement" the (fake) boss of the group explains how the oil industry has so far simply ignored the issue of the environment and is now trying to prevent the agreement. The video uses the negative portrayal of the oil industry to advertise the signing of a petition for a binding climate protection agreement.

Awards

The Avaaz video "Stop the Clash of Civilizations" (Stop the Clash of Civilizations ) won the 2007 YouTube award in the category "politics".

criticism

Leonard Novy, Fellow at the Berlin New Responsibility Foundation , criticizes the ability of online campaigns to bind and mobilize in an article in Spiegel about the Avaaz movement. He says literally: "Avaaz is highly professional by German standards, but primarily campaigning, so the bond remains volatile and loose."

The Greens and online expert Malte Spitz expresses similar concerns in the same article: There are tens of thousands of visitors to the Greens website, but only a few of them can be mobilized for action. The online campaigner Ben Bradzel, on the other hand, is less interested in how many people are accompanying the petition on the street, but rather analyzing the real political successes of the campaigns. He reports on many cases where online petitions by Avaaz and other organizations have achieved success, such as in Japan when Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda changed his position on a climate deal in 2007 when faced with 90,000 signatures collected at short notice.

British newspaper The Guardian wrote: “ Cynics argue that signing an online petition like joining a Facebook group takes seconds, achieves little, and does not encourage online activists to delve into the subject. "

Spiegel Online reported on Avaaz's involvement in the uprisings in Libya and Syria . “Since the start of the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad , Avaaz has helped establish a network of 200 citizen reporters reporting from the country. Above all, however, the group supported opponents of the regime in their smuggling activities. ”The same article goes on to say“ The fact that Avaaz intervened in civil war- like conflicts in Libya and now in Syria, at least on an organizational level , does not necessarily correspond to the profile of the group. "And" Critics complain that Avaaz is something for pseudo-activists who can buy the good conscience there with the least possible effort that they have done something against the injustice in the world. "
