The Avro Canada CF-103 was the project of an interceptor from the Canadian manufacturer Avro Canada in the early 1950s, and was intended to replace the CF-100 Canuck at the RCAF .

History and construction

Even before the prototype of the CF-100 flew, Avro Canada conducted studies for an advanced variant of the aircraft as the RCAF was looking for a supersonic interceptor. Due to the limitations identified with the CF-100, chief designer John Frost suggested a number of improvements, such as: B. thinner swept wings before. In December 1950, Avro Aircraft's design office began designing the CF-100's fuselage structure, with new swept wings and a new tail unit.

Frost saw the new design as an interim solution between the CF-100 and the advanced C-104 project. The main changes to the wing construction were the wing profile, the decreasing wing thickness, and the 42 ° arrowhead of the leading edge. This almost created a delta wing. Despite the planned installation of stronger engines and the new conception, only slightly better performance results compared to a series CF-100, namely only Mach 0.95 compared to Mach 0.85 of the series CF-100 Mk.2 and Mk.3.

In 1951 the Canadian Department of Trade and Commerce placed an order for two prototypes and a static fracture cell under the project name CF-103. A wooden mock-up was built, after which the prototype started. The first flight was planned for the summer of 1952, but was then postponed to mid-1953. As the Cold War progressed , the Canadian government demanded that the production of the latest CF-100 versions, as well as the development of their improved variants, take precedence over the CF-103, which ultimately led to the project being abandoned in December 1951.
