Axel Toupane (born July 23,  1992 in Mulhouse ) is a French basketball player .

career

Toupanes'  father Jean-Aimé, who came from Senegal , became a coach after his playing days and, among other things, looked after the French national youth team. Axel Toupane was born in Mulhouse in Alsace and grew up there, while his father was employed as a basketball player in the city. As a child he met Joffrey Lauvergne , whose father was also playing in Mulhouse at the time. Toupane played in the offspring of Élan Béarnais Pau-Lacq-Orthez , then he was trained in the youth department of SIG Strasbourg , in the 2011/12 season he was in the squad of Strasbourg's professional team for the first time. He made a big leap in development in the 2013/14 game year when he scored an average of 5.9 points and 2.4 rebounds per encounter in 30 league appearances for Strasbourg.

In July 2015, Toupane was signed by the NBA team Toronto Raptors  after playing for the Canadians in the NBA Summer League. At the end of October 2015, the Frenchman was removed from Toronto's squad, but stayed in North America and initially played for Toronto's training team in the NBA D-League before he was signed by the Denver Nuggets in early March 2016 . After his working paper was initially limited to ten days, he signed a contract in Denver until the end of the 2015/16 season and was  then given a two-year contract by the team from the US state of Colorado . However, Toupane was removed from Denver's squad in mid-October 2016. He played briefly for the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2016/17 season , then showed convincing performances in the shirt of the Raptors 905 Missisauga in the NBA D-League and was under contract with the New Orleans Pelicans at short notice in spring 2017 .

During the summer break of 2017, Toupane accepted an offer from the top Lithuanian club Žalgiris Kaunas and won the championship title in the Baltic country with the club in the 2017/18 season. Toupane moved to Olympiacos in Greece for the 2018/19 season . In mid-April 2019, he left Olympiakos due to outstanding salary payments.

In August 2019 he was announced as a new addition by the Spanish first division club Unicaja Malaga .

National team

Toupane played international matches for France's U20 national team, and made his debut in the men's national team in the summer of 2017. At the 2019 World Cup , he won the bronze medal with France.
