An ironing board (also ironing board , in professional parlance, ironing board ) is a tool for ironing laundry.

construction

An ironing board consists of a plywood or expanded metal surface with a lined fabric and a foldable metal frame. There is often a lever on the metal frame which is used to fix the set working height and, in some designs, as a latch for the folded ironing board.

Furnishing

Ironing tables in simple designs have an ironing surface, often made of expanded metal , over which an exchangeable fabric cover (often molton upholstery with cotton cover) is stretched, and a metal grid for the iron .

Equipment variants offer accessories to increase ironing comfort:

  • Own socket for an iron with supply line
  • Sleeve board (separately or as an attachment) for ironing sleeves and trousers
  • Metal-coated cover that reflects the heat radiation from the iron

history

In Scandinavia , a whale bone plaque was found along with one of the massive glass cylinders that were then used to smooth laundry. Therefore, a use as an ironing board is being discussed, allegedly they should have been used until the 19th century. During excavations, around 40 tablets made of whale bone were found, often as additions to women's graves, such as the boat grave in Scar . However, since only one of the panels was found spatially related to a glass cylinder, its use as an ironing board is so far only a guess.
