History of civil society

The Citizens Resource Society was founded on November 13, 1799 by eleven distinguished citizens of Hof. The 1804 share issue was intended to finance the construction of a meeting house. Since this issue was not quite sufficient for this, there were later small refinancing. For the independent middle class in the city of Hof, the meeting house served as the center of social life. The facility arose above all from the desire to be able to talk to informers undisturbed. In 1845 the property had to be ceded to the state for railway purposes, the compensation of 30,000 guilders was significantly more than had been invested in the property. In the end, the additional proceeds were not distributed among all association members, but only among the shareholders. In 1848 the new club building on Poststrasse, which is still in use today, was ready to move into. In 1900 it was registered as a "recognized association". In 1915 the citizen resource society became the civil society. In 1938 the civil society sold its building on Poststrasse in the city, which wanted to build a town hall there. During the war years the city plans changed and the building was preserved. From the 1950s the building was used again for cultural events. In 1994 the entrepreneur Hans Vießmann took over the building and had it extensively renovated in 1996. Today the building offers a foyer, a training room and a hall with a stage.
