The Basketball Union Salzburg (BBU Salzburg) is an Austrian basketball club from the city of Salzburg. The BBU was created in 2005 through a merger of the UBBC Salzburg and ULG Salzburg clubs . The club currently plays in the second division .

history

Foundation and regional leagues

In 2005, Waldemar Hekl, then chairman and head coach of the ULG Salzburg basketball club, pushed the merger with the UBBC Salzburg club . The new club that emerged in this way was to be called the Salzburg Basketball Union - BBU for short - in order to reflect the merger of the two clubs in the new club name. The merger was guided by the idea of becoming athletically competitive with a large Salzburg basketball club and also of standing on healthy feet economically. The UBBC was founded in 1952 by Wilhelm Schalk. The BBU Salzburg has roots that go back to the post-war years, when American occupation soldiers brought basketball to Salzburg.

The Wüstenrot company , which was already a sponsor of the ULG, was able to be won over as the main and name sponsor for the new basketball club right from the start . Accordingly, the club entered the Salzburg regional league in the first year of its existence under the name BBU Wüstenrot Salzburg . The club colors were set to blue, orange and white, and these still adorn the club's coat of arms today.

The first season of the still young club (2005/06) was also consistently successful: After finishing second in the regular season of the Salzburg regional league, ASKÖ Taxham could be eliminated in the semifinals and thus stood in the final against UZM Kaprun . The BBU also won this best-of-three series 2-0, and on May 21, 2006, after a 75-61 victory, the first championship title in the club's history was celebrated.

Associated with this success was the promotion to the next higher division, and thus the BBU Salzburg entered the Regionalliga West in the 2006/07 season . In this league, too, the final could be reached, but lost the all-important 3rd game of the best-of-three series against the Silverminers from Schwaz with only one point difference 90:91. And this should not be the only exciting duel in the "West Derby" against the Tyroleans.

The promotion to the second Bundesliga

In the following years, the BBU Salzburg sniffed the Bundesliga for the first time, as they competed in the second Bundesliga West from 2007 to 2012. You could assert yourself there as well and always played in the upper midfield of the table in the regular season. However, each time the semi-finals became a stumbling block, where they lost out twice against the Dornbirn Lions (2007/08 and 2009/10) and twice against the Silverminers Schwaz (2008/09 and 2010/11).

In the 2011/12 season, in contrast to previous years, an Austria-wide Second Bundesliga was played, which of course also included the Salzburg basketball players. However, this first year in this overall league was not very successful for the BBU : with only 3 wins out of 18 games, they ended up clearly in last place. The league's game mode was retained for the next year, but the BBU coach changed: In 2012, after Bernd Wimmer's resignation, former NBA player Aaron Mitchell was brought to Salzburg as head coach! Despite a massive increase in the quality of the game in the 2012/13 season, the BBU was only able to achieve the penultimate place in the basic round and thus had to face a relegation tournament in Schwaz . In this one could only breathe a sigh of relief after a victory against the Villach Raiders, as the next game against WSG Radenthein could not be won. So the all-important duel this season was - once again - the BBU against the Silverminers . Six years after the lost duel for the regional league title, Schwaz once again turned out to be bad ground for Salzburg: In what was probably the bitterest defeat in the club's young history, the BBU lost 72:80 and ended up on a relegation spot.

The descent into sporting insignificance could nevertheless be averted, as fortunately all the second division clubs were in favor of an increase in the league and thus for the BBU to remain in the second division . In addition, Renan Ferreira, the top scorer and the figurehead of the immediate competitor TU Silverminers, was brought to Salzburg for the 2013/14 season.

Today the BBU Salzburg is the largest and most successful basketball club in the state. A lot of value is also placed on youth work, and so girls and boys from the age of 8 are enabled to play basketball.

  • 2005 to 2010 BBU Wüstenrot Salzburg
  • Since 2010 BBU Salzburg

When the BBU was founded in 2005, Wüstenrot was able to be won as the main and name sponsor, and the basketball union began under the name of BBU Wüstenrot Salzburg in the first few years of its existence . Since the end of this cooperation, the club has been playing under the name BBU Salzburg .

The BBU Salzburg logo has the shape of a sign converging at the bottom. The shield is orange and outlined in white and blue. A blue band with the words BBU SALZBURG runs across the lower half of the sign . Above the lettering is the year 2005, which reflects the year the club was founded and pays tribute to the history of the club. Between the year and the ribbon is a stylized basketball. Below the ribbon is the stylized Salzburg fortress to express the bond with the hometown of Salzburg.
