The BMW Sauber F1.06 was the first Formula 1 race car of 2006 from Sauber Motorsport emerged teams BMW Sauber F1 .
background
On January 1, 2006, BMW took over the majority of the former Formula 1 team from Peter Sauber and founded its own works team. The name Sauber was left in the team name. The Hinwil location of the former Sauber team was also retained and most of the Sauber team was taken over. Peter Sauber stayed with the team as a consultant. After the 2005 season, BMW separated from its previous partner Williams and continued its Formula 1 involvement with its own team.
History and technology
The 2006 season was seen as a transition year after the takeover by BMW. The car was pleasantly surprising because of its competitiveness. The BMW Sauber F1.06 was a contender for points throughout the season.
BMW Sauber continued to develop the car throughout the year. Designer Willy Rampf offered the pilots improvements in the aerodynamics area in almost every race . The 2.4 liter V8 engine (model P86) weighed 95 kg. At 19,500 min -1 , the aggregate approximately 559 kW (760 hp). The semi-automatic seven-speed transmission was made by the team itself.
Livery and sponsors
BMW Sauber competed in the 2006 season with the main sponsors of the former Sauber team, Credit Suisse and Petronas . There were also new sponsors such as Intel , O2 and Dell . The entire team design was geared towards BMW in its traditional colors blue and white.
driver
The car was driven by Nick Heidfeld and Jacques Villeneuve . After the German Grand Prix , the differences between the team and Villeneuve became too great, so they split up and signed Robert Kubica as a driver.
Results
In the first year as BMW Sauber, the team achieved fifth place in the constructors' championship with 36 points.
The best results were two podiums. Heidfeld finished third at the Hungarian Grand Prix , while Kubica achieved the same placement at the Italian Grand Prix .
