The Bafour or Bafur were the indigenous people of Mauritania and are considered the ancestors of the farmers of the Soninke and the fishermen of Imraguen . They were primarily sedentary farmers. At the time when they inhabited northern Mauritania, the Sahara was still fertile. Later they migrated south to more fertile areas.
