Holborn Viaduct was a train station in central London . It was on the street of the same name on the western edge of the City of London . One part was built as a terminus station , a second part as a through station .

Holborn Viaduct

The six-track terminus at Holborn Viaduct was opened on March 2, 1874 as an additional terminus for the London, Chatham and Dover Railway (LC&DR). It was on a 267-meter-long branch of the route through the Snow Hill Tunnel . Passenger traffic through the tunnel was discontinued in 1916, and because of the short distance (640 meters) to Blackfriars station , the Ludgate Hill intermediate station was also closed in 1929 .

In the mid-1980s, the Snow Hill Tunnel was put back into operation for passenger traffic. The service at the Holborn Viaduct station was gradually reduced, and it was closed on January 26, 1990. The station building, which also housed a hotel, was demolished. The City Thameslink station was built as a replacement in the tunnel below .

Snow Hill / Holborn Viaduct Low Level

On August 1, 1874, the LC&DR also opened the two-track Snow Hill station . This was underground in the Snow Hill Tunnel, which connected the LC&DR with the Metropolitan Railway at Farringdon .

The station was located immediately north of the Holborn Viaduct terminus and was renamed Holborn Viaduct Low Level in 1912 . With the cessation of passenger traffic through the tunnel on June 1, 1916, the operation of the station also ended. The two side platforms have been partially preserved and are visible from the trains passing by.
