The Tanger-Ville train station ( French Gare de Tanger-Ville ; Arabic محطة طنجة المدينة, DMG Maḥaṭṭat Ṭanǧa al-Madīna ), also just Tanger Station for short ( French Gare de Tanger ) is the most important train station in the Moroccan city of Tangier. The terminus station, newly built in 2003, is the starting point for two railway lines, the Tangier – Casablanca line and the LGV Tangier – Kenitra high-speed line . It is operated by the Moroccan state railway company ONCF .

location

The Tanger-Ville terminus is located right in the center of Tangier at a roundabout on Avenue de Espagne . Only a few meters separate the station from the coast of the Strait of Gibraltar .

Today the station is the starting point (zero point) of the LGV Tanger – Kenitra high-speed line, which opened in 2018, and the existing railway line to Casablanca .

history

New construction of the train station

At the beginning of the 2000s, the entire traffic situation within the city of Tangier was to be rearranged in order to increase the quality of stay on the promenade and its surroundings. Construction work on behalf of ONCF began in January 2002.

For this purpose, the two previously existing train stations Gare de Tanger-Ville and Gare de Tanger-Port were demolished, in which time the trains already ended in the suburban train station Gare de Tanger-Morora . The architect Youssef Melehi designed a completely new station building with a floor area of 1880 square meters, as well as a two-story multi-purpose building with a floor area of 2700 square meters. The opening of the new train station took place on August 27, 2003. The construction costs are said to have amounted to 50 million Moroccan dirhams.

Preparation for high-speed traffic

In the course of the construction of the new high-speed railway line from Tangier to Kenitra ( LGV Tanger – Kenitra ), the station received an extension in the early 2010s with five additional platform tracks with a platform length of 400 meters. The construction costs are said to have amounted to 360 million Moroccan dirhams.

The first high-speed trains of the ONCF brand Al Boraq started operating on November 15, 2018 between Tangier and Casablanca.
