Ball grind

Blade types :
1.) Flat cut
2.) Crowned cut

A ball grind, also spherically ground , is a blade shape that forms a pointed arc in cross section. This type of cut is also called Eisenhauer cut .

This blade geometry is extremely stable and the blade is not so easily wedged into solid materials (wood, bone) when hit. Chopping knives and axes are ground spherically in order to use this advantage practically. In return , it must be accepted that the blade is less capable of cutting than with a flat grind . The cutting edge angle is also more difficult to maintain when grinding .

A blade is ground to a spherical shape by gradually increasing the sharpening angle on a grindstone. Another option is to use a soft pad. The abrasive nestles in a curve around the material to be sanded. A crowned grind can also accidentally result from improper sharpening of the blade.
