During his service, he achieved great popularity through the relief of tribute payments and social liberal economic policy. He led several lawsuits against state officials and sentenced several corrupt nobles and officials to death. After his death, he was sacrificed in legal disputes in order to obtain a positive verdict. Many cities named Bao Zheng their city god. 400 years after his death, he was used as an ideal judge in various judge stories. Because of his popularity, he has been mystified in adventure stories about Judge Bao [Wade-Giles: Pao]. Bert Brecht took it as a model for the Caucasian Chalk Circle .
