Barawa (ship)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Barawa was a German-built cargo ship of the Zansibar Mail Line of Steamers of the Sultan of Zanzibar , which was also used by the German Navy.

history

The Barawa , named after the city of Barawa in Somalia , was built in 1885 by the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft under construction number 80 for the Zansibar Mail Line of Steamers of the Sultan of Zanzibar.

The Zansibar Mail Line of Steamers, based on the East African island of Zanzibar, chartered the ship to the Imperial Navy in 1888 to supply their blockade squadron off East Africa. Because of the Arab uprising of 1888, warships from Germany, England and Italy blocked the East African coast against the slave trade of the Arabs and against the smuggling of arms to the rebels in East Africa.

In May 1889, the navy passed the ship on to the Wissmann fleet. The Wissmann fleet, named after the Reich Commissioner Hermann von Wissmann , who was responsible for suppressing the uprising, was responsible for landing and supplying German troops on the East African coast.

In January 1892, the Barawa went back to the Zansibar Mail Line of Steamers.

The Barawa was probably canceled in 1909 .
