Bartholomäus Ehlen House

The Bartholomäus-Ehlen-Haus is a historic house at Hauptstraße 89 in Bergheim- Mitte, which was named after the doctor Bartholomäus Ehlen (1760-1818).

Building history and architecture

The doctor Bartholomäus Ehlen lived here in 1799. House no. 89 is a simple two-story plastered building from the second half of the 18th century. The front door is well above the floor level and can be reached via stairs. Originally the groundwater was very high, so that the problem arose for the construction situation at the time that the cellars could not be built deep enough. The problem was solved by placing the basement ceiling well above ground level. But this made a special staircase necessary. In 1911, the general electricity company and the district's construction department were housed here.
