The St. Peter's Basilica is a Roman Catholic Church in Columbia , capital of the US states, South Carolina . The church belonging to the Diocese of Charleston is dedicated to the Apostle Peter and has the title of a minor basilica .

history

After the parish was founded in 1820, a church was built in 1824, which became the mother church in the area. The structure was demolished in favor of a new building begun in 1906. This church was completed in 1908 according to plans by Frank Pierce Milburn and consecrated in 1909. Pope John Paul II visited the church on September 11, 1987. St. Peter's Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Pope Francis elevated the church to the rank of minor basilica in 2018 . This makes the church the first basilica in South Carolina.

architecture

The three-aisled basilica was built on a cruciform floor plan in the neo-Gothic, Victorian style of dark red bricks, which were set off with Bedford limestone and butt-glazed terracotta plaster. The 40 meter long church has an internal height of 15.6 meters. With the lower aisles, the church is 19.5 meters wide, and 24 meters in the transept. The chancel is closed with a five-sided apse , the windows of which come from Munich. The tower rises above the entrance area, with a helmet with a cross rising to 49.7 meters. The church cemetery is at the rear of the church.
