Battenberg or Battenburg markings are a special form of luminous color markings mainly on vehicles of blue light organizations in various European countries as well as Australia , New Zealand and Hong Kong , and since 2017 also in the Bavarian rescue service. The name refers to the similar appearance of a Battenberg cake .

history

Battenberg markings were developed in England in the mid-1990s for the police authorities in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and then also used by private rescue organizations to ensure maximum visibility during the day and night.

To do this, it uses the contrast of a light neon and a dark color, arranged in alternating rectangles on the sides of the vehicle.

use

United Kingdom

In the UK, three quarters of all emergency services have used Battenberg since 2003.

Rescue workers mainly use green, the police blue, ambulances green and the fire brigade red as the basic color.

Germany

This type of warning marking is also beginning to gain acceptance in Germany. Since 2017, almost all uniformly procured rescue vehicles in Bavaria have also been wrapped in the Battenburg marking. Cars in the Bavarian rescue service have a modification and are based on the VESBA design of the police at the rear. Starting in 2019, vehicles procured for the service providers in Schleswig-Holstein were also introduced based on the Bavarian concept (large areas of bright red and bright yellow checks). In the area of the fire brigade , the Mettmann volunteer fire brigade began wrapping its vehicle fleet in the Battenberg pattern in 2018: retroreflective yellow rectangles were glued to a red fluorescent base film in order to increase both day and night visibility.
