history

In Olten the old post office building became too small and the post office was considering centralizing its offices in Aarau or Zofingen . On the initiative of the Olten mayor Casimir von Arx , the Olten AG construction company was founded in 1897, which constructed a new building with rooms for the post office, the telegraph, the Olten electricity company and private apartments. In the share capital of SFr. 150,000 the savings fund and the Solothurner Kantonalbank each participated with SFr. 25,000. At the end of 1898, all tenants had moved into the new building. After the post office was sold to the federal government in 1929, high taxes and duties reduced the company's earnings. In 1931, the nominal value of the shares was sFr. 1000 to SFr. 500 reduced with the simultaneous issuance of 200 bonds à CHF. 500 to the shareholders. In the period that followed, the Olten construction company created an entire city quarter, which today still shapes the face of the right bank of the Aare with its striking buildings. The row of houses from Bahnhofplatz to the ATEL administration building, as well as the Postgasse and Bahnhofstrasse buildings, are the work of this AG. The last houses built by the company were completed in 1966. The company's share capital was still only SFr. 200,000. The banks therefore refused the necessary building loans and mortgages in order to be able to realize new projects. Thus the construction company changed to an administration and finance company. In 1988, PTT took over the Olten AG construction company with the remaining properties and dissolved them.
