Cut (music)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The word Cut ( engl. Cut = cut ) describes a technique with which the DJ (Disc Jockey) creates a transition between two songs. Essentially, it is about combining the beginning of the song with the end of the old song by placing certain song fragments of the new song on top of the old song (overlay = play at the same time). This creates a mixture for a brief moment that concludes the old song and initiates the new one. However, a cut does not necessarily have to be short: There are DJs who use this technique to intentionally create a certain tension by delaying the final beginning of the next song for a relatively long time. Of great importance in this turntablism technique are the right moment and a very fine sense of rhythm , which enables one to bring about a song almost unnoticed and let another end harmoniously. One of those who first used this technique for his purposes was Kool DJ Herc , one of the three fathers of hip hop . He played certain pieces ( loops ) over and over again, mixed another beat or melody, which he could then run in infinite variations in order to build a song that was unique with very little material, in short - freestyle .

I only gave people what they wanted to hear. I watched the guys on the side: They were just waiting for certain breaks. So I lined up several of these beat spots and boom, boom, boom - the place exploded. I loved it! "

Beat cutting

When Beat Cutting , just as Cutting referred, is a DJ technique that particularly in hip-hop plays a role and DJ Grandmaster Flash was co-developed. Breakbeats are generated by repeating short sections of the same disk in real time .

Beat Cutting is a less common form of the special Beatjuggling . Many DJs prefer to mix two records together as this is easier to do.

Basically, beat cutting is the same as scratching, except that the sound material used here consists of small drum parts. By repeating certain similar patterns it is possible to play drums with a turntable and mixer. Consequently, it is a very specific instrumentalization method to achieve a certain musical form of expression. With the help of the so-called S notation it is possible to perform this instrumental activity according to musical notes - just like with any other traditional musical instrument.
