Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy

The Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy , briefly called BIRA-IASB (for the Dutch name Belgisch Instituut voor Ruimte-Aëronomie and the French name Institut d'Aéronomie Spatiale de Belgique ), is a Belgian research institution in the high atmosphere ( aeronomy ) department based in the municipality of Uccle / Ukkel in the south of Brussels .

The institute was founded in 1964. Its main task is the exploration of the terrestrial high atmosphere and the near space , for the purpose of which it works together with the European Space Agency (ESA) .
