Benefits Supervisor Resting is a painting by Lucian Freud . It is the second picture after Evening in the Studio in a series of four acts that were created between 1993 and 1996 in Freud's London studio about a year apart. Sue Tilley was always the nude model .
description
Sue Tilley's supervisory shown and extreme close. She crouches asleep in the corner of a sofa with her legs drawn up. The arms are broad and loosely spread out on the back and armrests of the sofa, the head tilts backwards on the backrest so that the viewer is shown almost demonstratively the vulnerability of the neck and throat. The seat of the sofa is deeply indented by the weight of its body. The light falling in from the top left gently models her body and casts only a few faint shadows. In contrast to the previous picture, where the black hair curls around the head of a Medusa, her hair is now cut short and the pubic hair is completely removed.
Apart from the trimmed sofa protruding diagonally from the picture, the section of the room is almost unfurnished. Behind the sofa, on the wall, of which only a narrow, light section can be seen on the left, is a three-part black screen that looks like a triptych . The course of the brown wooden floorboards runs in the opposite direction to the direction of the sofa. Freud bought the sofa especially for Sue Tilley; in the series of sessions for Evening in the Studio (1993) she had to pose in a very uncomfortable position on the bare floor.

The picture was sold by Freud's New York gallery - the Acquavella Galleries - to a private collector and auctioned from private ownership on May 13, 2015 at Christie's in New York for $ 56,165,000. That is the highest price that has been achieved so far for a painting by Lucian Freud in an auction.
