Benjamin E. Gray

Benjamin Edwards Gray (* near Bardstown , Nelson County , Kentucky ; † in Selma , Alabama ) was an American politician . Between 1851 and 1855 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Benjamin Gray was a grandson of Benjamin Edwards (1753-1829), who represented Maryland in Congress between 1793 and 1795 . Both his birth and death dates are unknown. He enjoyed a good elementary school education. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer, he began to practice in Hopkinsville in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career.

Gray became a member of the Whig Party . He was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1838 and 1839 ; from 1847 to 1851 he was a member of the State Senate . At times he was President of that Chamber and Acting Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky. In the congressional election of 1850 , Gray was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the second constituency of Kentucky , where he succeeded James Leeper Johnson on March 4, 1851 . After re-election in 1852, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1855, which were marked by the tensions in the run-up to the civil war .

In the elections of 1854 Benjamin Gray lost to John P. Campbell of the American Party . After that his track is lost. What is certain is that he died in Selma sometime after he left Congress.
