Benjamin Franklin Marsh (* 1839 in Hancock County , Illinois ; †  June 2, 1905 in Warsaw , Illinois) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1905 he represented the state of Illinois three times in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Benjamin Marsh attended private schools and Jubilee College . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1860, he began to work in this profession in Warsaw. During the civil war he served in the army of the Union , in which he rose to colonel until he left military service in January 1866. He then practiced as a lawyer again in Warsaw until 1877. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party .

In the congressional election of 1876 , Marsh was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the tenth constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Democrat John C. Bagby on March 4, 1877 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1883 . From 1881 he was chairman of the pension committee. In 1882 he was not re-elected. After his time in the US House of Representatives, Benjamin Marsh worked in agriculture, especially in the field of livestock. From 1889 to 1893 he was, among other things, Railroad and Warehouse Commissioner of his state. In June 1888 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago , where Benjamin Harrison was nominated as a presidential candidate.

In the elections of 1892 Marsh was re-elected to Congress in the eleventh district of his state, where he replaced Benjamin T. Cable on March 4, 1893 . After three re-elections, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1901. During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . From 1895 he was chairman of the militia committee. In 1900 he was not re-elected. Two years later he was re-elected to Congress in the 14th District of Illinois, where he could remain after a re-election between March 4, 1903 and his death on June 2, 1905.
