In the early years of Japanese cinema , the Benshi ( Japanese 弁 士 ) were speakers who stood next to the screen and gave voice to the characters on it. The narratives and explanations of the Benshi were considered a very important cinematographic component in the early Japanese film experience, and many Benshi even made it to a certain level of notoriety.
