Bernard B. Brown (* 24. July 1898 in Wisconsin ; † 20th February 1981 in Glendale , California ) was an American composer of film music , film and sound engineer , who not only one Oscar for best sound , but also a Oscar for technical merit ( technical Achievement Award ) was given.

biography

Brown began as a film and sound engineer in the Hollywood film industry in the early 1930s and, after making his debut in the film Congo Jazz (1930), worked on the production of more than 500 films.

At the Academy Awards in 1939 he was first nominated for an Oscar in the category of best sound for the film That Certain Age (1938). At the following Academy Awards in 1940 , he won the Oscar for Best Sound in When Tomorrow Comes (1939).

In 1941 he was nominated three times: for the best sound in Spring Parade (1940), for the Oscar for the best visual effects in the films The Invisible Returns (1940) together with John P. Fulton and William Hedgcock and together with JP Fulton and Joe Lapis for The Boys from Syracuse (1940). Further nominations for the best sound followed in 1942 for consultation hours for love (1941) and in 1943 for Arabian Nights (1942). He was also nominated again in 1943 with JP Fulton for the Oscar for the best visual effects in The Invisible Agent (1942).

This was followed by further nominations for the Oscar in the best sound category, namely in 1944 for Phantom of the Opera (1943), 1945 for Die Stubenfee (1944) and 1946 for The Lady on the Train (1945).

At the Academy Awards in 1945 he received the Oscar for technical merits, the so-called Technical Achievement Award , "for the development and construction of a dedicated recording room for soloists and choirs".

In addition, he worked as a film and sound engineer for other well-known films such as The invisible woman (1940), Black Friday (1940), This Woman Is Mine (1941), Saboteure (1942), In the shadow of doubts (1943), The woman in Grün (1945) and Avengers of the Underworld (1946) and worked during his almost thirty-year career with film directors such as Edward Ludwig , John M. Stahl , Henry Koster , Joe May , A. Edward Sutherland , William A. Seiter , John Rawlins , Edwin L. Marin , Arthur Lubin , Frank Borzage , Charles David , Alfred Hitchcock , Roy William Neill and Robert Siodmak together.

Most recently he was supervisor for sound engineering at Universal Studios until 1947, handing this position over to Leslie I. Carey .

Bernard Brown was also active as a composer and created the music for almost 30 films.
