Bernhard R. Appel (born February 20, 1950 in Wallersdorf , Lower Bavaria ) is a German musicologist . His research focuses on the life and work of the composer Robert Schumann , music history of the 18th and 19th centuries, Ludwig van Beethoven's works, compositional creative processes as well as the methodology, theory and practice of music philology , in particular genetic text criticism and digital music edition. In addition, Appel deals with the history of the viola da gamba .

Life

Appel studied school music at the Saarland University of Music and musicology , German , linguistics and philosophy at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken . From 1977 to 1984 he was a research assistant, then assistant at the Institute for Musicology at the Saarland University, where he received his doctorate on Robert Schumann in 1981 with a thesis on Robert Schumann that was awarded the Eduard Martin Prize of the Saarland University . From 1985 to 1986 he worked in the DFG project "Locations for Schumann Autographs" at the University of Cologne . From 1986 to 2006 he was a senior employee of the Robert Schumann Research Center in Düsseldorf and founding editor of the New Schumann Complete Edition . In 1996 he received the Schumann Prize from the city of Zwickau . In 2000 he completed his habilitation at the University of Dortmund . In 2003 Appel was appointed professor by the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia. He took up teaching positions, primarily in music philology, at the universities of Saarbrücken, Marburg , Bonn and at the music academy in Düsseldorf .

From 2007 to 2015 he was the director of the Beethoven archive and the Beethoven-Haus publishing house as well as the editor of the New Beethoven Complete Edition , the Bonn Beethoven Studies and the Beethoven Sketchbook Edition series . Sketches and drafts . As part of the Beethoven Archive, in 2007 he founded an annual summer Beethoven preparatory college to promote young musicologists in the field of music philology, which he organized and directed until 2015.

Since the 1990s Appel has been concerned with the development of a music-related "genetic text criticism". This ties in with the musical sketch research that has been carried out since around 1860 and combines with methodological and theoretical concepts of the literature-related critique génétique that has been used in France since the 1970s . Appel retired in March 2015, but continues to oversee the Beethoven Workshop research project, which is located in the Beethoven House in Bonn and Detmold, together with Joachim Veit from the Detmold-Paderborn Musicology Seminar . Genetic text criticism and digital music edition ( Beethoven's workshop ). This 16-year basic research project, funded by the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz since 2014 , develops text-genetic methods for researching compositional creative processes on the basis of Beethoven's workshop documents (sketches, drafts, working manuscripts, transcripts, etc.) and at the same time develops new digital forms the presentation and communication of the research results achieved. The project works u. a. with the coding format MEI developed for music notation by an international research group (Music encoding initiative). Both the text-genetic methods and working techniques developed in "Beethoven's workshop" as well as the digital edition concepts that are inextricably linked with them should also be able to be applied to other composers.
