history

The Bernstein-Verlag was founded on January 1st, 2002 as a civil law partnership (GbR) by the twin brothers Andreas Remmel and Paul Remmel, born in 1972, in Bonn. In 2015, the company moved to Siegburg for the purpose of merging with the Bernstein publishing house [R²].

Initially installed as a self-publisher for the "Goethe-Blätter" series of publications by the Goethe-Gesellschaft Siegburg eV, which the publishers co-founded in 2000, intensive familiarization with the publishing industry soon developed into a small program area that established the foundation for what is today Range of publications put down.

The training content and the entrepreneurs' own interests define the framework for the publishing program: After an insurance apprenticeship (PR) or higher commercial school as well as a basic course in Catholic theology and Romance studies (AR), both of them turned to legal studies, which up to the present day have more and more to be replaced more by the gratifyingly growing and thus increasing commitment in the publishing house.

In addition to its own academic series, the »Contributiones Bonnenses«, which is devoted to the main areas of publishing, namely law / economics, theology / philosophy, history / classical studies and literary / cultural studies, the Bernstein-Verlag u . a. also the writings of the Goethe Society Siegburg and the Goethe Society Bonn. There is also cooperation with the Cologne Goethe Society. Here the publisher takes on the printing of the club information.

For projects in the literary field in particular, the academic profile of the program is expanded to include a non-academic or popular academic character; from 2010 the publishing program will also have a fiction program branch. Novels and Co. should (can) find a journalistic Bernstein place here.

The field of activity is also expanded by a quasi two-pronged program that turns towards the visual arts; On the one hand, the publisher is developing an art postcard program and, on the other hand, the publishers set up the "Goethe-Sammlung Bernstein (GSB)". This collection would like to give visual artists space to deal with the subject of Goethe in their own way - and not literarily. If possible, postcards are made of the works of art acquired by GSB and can be obtained from the publisher.

The logo of the house brings into the picture the existence of the publishers as monozygous twin brothers and - in this case - the resulting productive bond. A literary allusion (re) interpreted towards this circumstance can be discovered in the motto-like Goethe verses from the West-Eastern Divan, Ginkgo Biloba: “Is it a living being / that is separate in itself / are there are two who choose / that one knows them as one. "

The eponymous fossil resin, amber , is also connected to the bond structure of the publishers: amber is assigned to the zodiac sign 'Gemini', who resides in the northern sky. Since they were born in May and thus in this sign of the zodiac, they are, as it were, 'double twins': genetic and astrological.

Since September 1st 2012 the Bernstein-Verlagsbuchhandlung, Gebr. Remmel - R² in Siegburg has existed alongside and in addition to the publisher . In addition to a general range, it also offers the Bernstein titles and a literary-musical cultural program. The Bernstein publishing house was closed on March 31, 2019.

The Goethe Collection Bernstein (GSB)

This collection gives visual artists the opportunity to deal with the subject of Goethe in an artistic rather than a literary way . If possible, postcards will be made of the works of art acquired by GSB, which will be distributed by the publisher.
