Beyer Speed Figures

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Beyer Speed Figures are a points system with which the performance of horse racing horses in North America is assessed. It was developed by Andrew Beyer, Washington Post columnist , in the early 1970s. Every racehorse that competes in a gallop race in the USA or Canada is assigned a score (the Beyer Speed Figure) after each race, which is intended to reflect its performance. This score expresses the elapsed time under the given conditions. With the Beyer Speed Figures, racing performances on different racetracks and distances can be compared with one another. Andrew Beyer first published his Speed Figures in 1975 in his book Picking Winners , and since 1992 the Beyer Speed Figures have been an integral part of the Daily Racing Form magazine. The best horses achieve speed figure values around 100 points on the Beyer scale, extremely strong performances have also been noted with over 120 points. Similar point systems are used in Europe, in England by Timeform and in Germany by Gallop Statistics . However, the European scores are not identical to those of the Beyer Speed Figures.

Records

The two highest recorded Beyer Speed Figures were achieved by the stallion Groovy in 1987, who scored 131 and 134 in the Roseben Handicap (1200 meters) and in the True North Stakes (1300 meters), both at Belmont Park Racecourse (New York). In 2004 the stallion Ghostzapper achieved a score of 128 in the Philip H. Iselin Stakes (1,800 meters) in Monmouth Park (New Jersey). According to Andrew Beyer, if Beyer Speed Figures had already existed in the early 1970s, the triple would have been Crown winner Secretariat the horse with the highest value of all time. Beyer retrospectively calculated a Speed Figure score of 139 for his victory in the Belmont Stakes 1973 (2400 meters).
