In the original sense of the word, a library portal is the (distinctive main) entrance to a library building . Today the term is also used abstractly as:

• IT access to the inventory and catalog system of a library via a computer network, see portal (IT)
• a web portal for joint access to the resources of several linked libraries or archives (see, inter alia, library network )
