Bica (espresso)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A cup of espresso

A bica is a Portuguese espresso variation and is the name for an espresso , especially in Lisbon . The literal translation is "pouring out" .

The term is also an acronym or play on words and means B eba I sto C om A çúcar ( drink this with sugar ). When the espresso began to be marketed in the famous Café A Brasileira in the Chiado district of Lisbon , the people there didn't like the bitter taste of the café at all. In short, a new slogan was invented. The term then became so successful that it has held up to this day. The Portuguese also differentiate between a "normal" Bica (the half-filled cup) and a full cup, the café cheio (German: full cup ).

In the whole of Portugal it is “good form” to visit your regular café at least 2-3 times a day, enjoy a bica and discuss the most important news with your friends.
