billiger.de is a German online price comparison portal . The website is operated by solute GmbH , was part of the ProSiebenSat.1 Media group from 2007 to 2009 and is now a 91% holding of a publishing group of directory publishers. billiger.de is and has been the only internet project of solute GmbH so far . The company has been based in Karlsruhe since it was founded in 2004 . As the first and only price comparison portal nationally and internationally, it received the Safer Shopping seal from TÜV Süd from 2007 to 2012 . TÜV Rheinland has been doing a website check since 2012 .

Company history

The solute company was founded on March 4th, 2004 by Urs Keller and Lars Bauer . The entry in the commercial register took place on March 18, 2004. Urs Keller had previously been the leading manager of the Web.de portal , to which he had sold his agency websolute new media AG in 2000. Urs Keller was also managing director until 2009, but left the company in 2009 to devote himself to other business areas. Lars Bauer remained managing director at solute until May 27, 2010, after which he remained as a partner. Lorenz Petersen, who has been responsible for business development and online marketing since 2005, is the managing director with sole power of representation according to the resolution of the shareholders' meeting on June 29, 2009.

With a notarized purchase contract from 18./19. December 2008 acquired after approval by the Federal Cartel Office, the solute holding GmbH & Co KG , Hannover, a consortium of eleven publishers, including the Heinz Heise , 91% of the shares of solute GmbH . The solute holding GmbH & Co. KG is the parent company of solute GmbH , to which the shares of solute GmbH from ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG were sold. 37 publishers are now involved in solute holding , with DeTeMedien being the largest shareholder . The German Telekom AG is involved on DeTeMedien in solute GmbH.

The remaining shares remained with the old shareholders. Since April 2010 billiger.de has employed people in Bulgaria through a personnel leasing company. Branches in other countries no longer exist.

Solute gmbh has been operating an office in Leipzig since July 2015. Another location was established in Dresden in April 2017.

In addition, in December 2016 the company announced the purchase of the Internet portal shopping.de from the bankruptcy estate of the Unister Group.

Urs Keller had owned the billiger.de domain since 1997 and decided to set up his own price comparison portal when it became apparent in 2003/2004 that the e-commerce business would be booming. At first the solute GmbH was independent. In February 2005, billiger.de was the first portal in the field to start an experiment with SevenOne Intermedia , a subsidiary of the ProSiebenSat.1 Media group , which runs the price comparison portal through targeted TV campaigns on its own channels ProSieben , Sat.1 , Kabel eins and made n24 known throughout Germany in order to gain synergy effects in the Internet area.

On February 1, 2007, 74.8% of solute GmbH was taken over by ProSiebenSat.1 Media because, according to Spiegel Online , they wanted to expand their position as "one of the largest Internet providers", the rest remained with the previous shareholders. In 2008 billiger.de expanded abroad under the name Miniprice and Miniprix and opened price comparison portals in France, Italy and Spain.

Structure and principle of operation

The structure and functional principle of billiger.de are similar to those of other price comparison platforms. Revenue depends on search engine marketing , as this has a direct influence on the number of visitors who visit the pages. An actual, fundamentally objective and neutral comparison between all possible cheap price offers on the Internet in the form of non-partisanship , contrary to what is often suggested in advertising , does not take place because the portals only show dealers with whom contracts have been concluded beforehand.

billiger.de also only shows product comparisons on its website with online retailers who are contractually connected with them. In order to win customers, billiger.de runs various marketing campaigns and indirectly forwards customers to the operators of the online shops. Thus, a search for the premise sought by billiger.de in the name of the cheaper offer in front of other providers always represents a selection controlled by them and never the entire available range of the national or international online shop contingent. Shops that are not contractually with billiger.de are not taken into account by the internal search engine of the price comparison platform and do not appear in the offer displays.

The dealers must guarantee that they will not discontinue any products that are about violence or war glorification, sedition or similar content. Erotic or pornographic content is also rejected, as are offers that violate the Drugs, Anesthesia and Weapons Act. After registering the online shop in the partner area, a partner application is generated, which must be signed and sent back to solute gmbh (by letter or fax). After the check and approval by solute gmbh , the contract is concluded and the access data to the dealer area is sent. There the dealers have to complete their master data including a link to the product data feed (product data file). The fields required for listing in the offer data file are comparable to those of other price comparison portals.

The shop receives personal access data and an account within one working day. The retailer must log in there and complete the information on his products. As a rule, the shop is activated fourteen days after completion. The product data, including a deep link, is placed on the partner shop's product page on the portal. Visitors to the site are redirected to the online shops connected to the platform free of charge, billing mode is based on an internal count of the clicks on the product and redirection to the partner site. The contract shop receives a statistical evaluation of the number of clicks per calendar month with the invoice.

The clicks are checked by internal tools, so computer-generated clicks, e.g. B. by bots not in the statistics. Clicks from the same IP within 60 seconds on an identical server on a specific product are also filtered out and not counted. The counting mechanism is checked in real time by three different systems.

Using a category-specific filter, users can selectively access a selection of the products offered by the individual dealers by selecting them by brand, price, equipment, etc. Shop operators can use internal statistical tools to measure the access rate of users who were referred to them via the price comparison portal. billiger.de had over 3,600 online shops under contract in the 2010 financial year. Another tool that billiger.de offers is the savings advisor . The Sparberater is contrary to the statistical tools that B2B are programs, a B2C - add-on that can be downloaded by the customer and to facilitate comparison of prices in which it when you click on a product, the product offer within landing pages in other online shops and Google search results pages and shows whether this is offered even cheaper in the product pool. According to his own statement, neither tracking nor data exchange with the shop operators takes place while using the tool . The savings advisor was certified on July 29, 2011 with a certificate from the TÜV Saarland Group for tested software . The certificate is valid until July 31, 2012 and must be renewed annually.

Market position and ranking

According to AGOF , billiger.de had a reach of 2.38 million visitors in the November 2013 counting period, making it one of the most popular price comparison services in Germany. According to IVW , the portal was in second place in the click pot behind idealo.de and ahead of ciao.de. According to Alexa Internet , the site ranked third in Germany after ciao.de and idealo.de when compared to other price comparison platforms . In a comparison of the online test platform Getestet.de in June 2011, billiger.de came in 2nd place with a grade of 1.8, after idealo.de with a grade of 1.7 and ahead of guenstiger.de with a grade of 1.9. According to the 37th study by the market research institute Fitkau & Maaß , billiger.de was the "most famous price comparison portal in Germany" by autumn 2013 with 89.7%, ahead of guenstiger.de with 86.2% and preisvergleich.de with 74.4% and with 53.2% it ranks second among the "most used price comparisons in German-speaking countries" behind guenstiger.de with 53.1% and ahead of preisvergleich.de with 43.0%.
