Biria unplugged is a mountain bike from the German manufacturer Biria .

Construction and technology

The frame , fork , cranks and wheels are made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) by TM-design in Solingen. A special feature of the design is that both the front and rear wheels are held in one arm. A suspension was dispensed with in favor of the minimalist design.

The parts made of CFRP were delivered to Biria, where they were then assembled into a bicycle. Each copy differs in the details of the equipment, as this could be freely selected by the customer. All specimens have 26-inch - wheels , Sachs-disc brakes and weigh around 12 kg. The most expensive variant was delivered with a gold-plated chain.

history

The development of a bicycle with a carbon frame and a projected sales price of 7000 DM was announced by Biria in 1992.

The "Biria unplugged" was finally presented in 1996, but was only available on the market in 1998 and cost up to DM 23,000 (which, adjusted for inflation, corresponds to over € 15,000 in 2018). 143 pieces were planned, of which only 17 were completed. After Biria went bankrupt, another 10 carbon sets came onto the market, these have no reference whatsoever to the manufacturer.

The Biria unplugged was shown in numerous museums as a milestone in bicycle construction, mostly from the Michael Embacher collection, including the Portland Art Museum (2013), Design Museum Holon (2013) and the MuseumsQuartier in Vienna (2006). Upon completion, the collection was auctioned off at Dorotheum.

In a report by Deutschlandfunk, the bicycle was jokingly described as "suitable for the moon".
