Black Shell

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Black Shell (from the English "black grenade") is a fireworks called in pyrotechnics , which rises after ignition, but does not explode, but falls back to the ground in one piece and still capable of detonation . It's a special kind of failure .

Emergence

Construction of fireworks

Fireworks for medium and high-altitude fireworks ( bombs, bomb beds and rockets ) consist of:

  • the propellant charge , which catapults the effect body into the air
  • the delay rate , which ensures that the effect only detonates at its determined altitude
  • the decomposition charge , which decomposes the effect body at the determination height
  • the effect set that is ignited and distributed by the decomposing charge and creates the well-known acoustic and visual effects of fireworks.

Failure of the charges

After igniting the propellant charge , the effect body is shot up. The task of the propellant charge is to ignite the delay set contained in the effect body , which ignites after its delay time has elapsed and in turn ignites the decomposing charge . If this chain is interrupted (due to production errors, penetration of moisture, etc.), there is no breakdown in the air and no ignition of the effect set. In this case the effect body falls to the ground again and remains capable of detonation.

The pyrotechnician performing the work is responsible for ensuring that Black Shells are searched for, collected and properly disposed of after fireworks .

Naming

  • Black in this context means "dirty", "bad", "dangerous". The effect body is also colored black by the deflagrated propellant charge.
  • Shell is the English expression for "shell", "sleeve" or "grenade".
