The Blair House in Washington, DC (address: 1651 Pennsylvania Avenue NW) serves as the official guest house of the US president .

history

The building was built in Federal Style in 1824 . In 1942 it was bought by the US government. Since then it has served as accommodation for the President's guests, especially on state visits. Many presidents spent the night before their inauguration at Blair House.

During the so-called Truman reconstruction (from 1948 to 1952), in which the White House was completely renovated, the headquarters of the government was in the Blair House. In the 1980s the house was renovated and expanded.

Blair House got its name from the politician and journalist Francis Preston Blair Sr. (1791–1876), who bought the building in 1836. On October 15, 1966, the home was listed on the National Register of Historic Places . It has been a National Historic Landmark since October 26, 1973 .
