Blogger is a blog - service of the US company Google Inc. , which is offered for public use.

history

The service was founded in August 1999 by the US company Pyra Labs . In 2003 the search engine company Google Inc. bought the company and with it the service and developed it further. In addition, features that were previously chargeable were now offered free of charge. Pyra Labs co-founder Evan Williams left Google less than a year later.

Google bought the image software Picasa in 2004. Picasa's photo-Publication utility Hello has been integrated into the software "bloggers" and allowed the users to create their images to their blogs to publish ( "post").

On May 9, 2004, Blogger's appearance was changed in collaboration with the web design companies Adaptive Path and Stopdesign . In addition, new features such as CSS -compliant templates, individual archive pages for contributions and posting by e-mail have been added.

Until March 2010, blogs could be installed on a server freely selectable by the user (via FTP or SFTP ).

In 2006, all blogs created with a Google account were transferred to the Google servers. Some features were introduced with the migration, for example: labels, drag & drop for layout, permissions (private blogs) and web feeds .

Blogger for Word was a free extension for Microsoft Office that made it possible to edit entries online and offline. In January 2007, Google announced that this add-on is no longer compatible with the current version of the blogger. With Microsoft Office 2007 it is possible to publish entries in Blogger without the add-on.

Functions

The service offers the option of running the blogs on the company's own Blogspot server with an address such as myblog.blogspot.com . In addition, you can set up your own domain name such as www.meinblog.de to access the blog operated by Blogspot.

  • The Blogger button is integrated in the Google Toolbar , with which it is possible to post either an entire website or just a selection on your blog .
  • It is very easy to run Google AdSense ads with Blogger .
  • The service allows multiple authors to work on the same blog.

criticism

According to a study by Sophos , a provider of security software , Blogger was the world's largest distributor of malware with its blogspot.com domain in 2008 .

Further criticism arose from the non-transparent implementation of guidelines and terms of use, due to which blogs were deleted on various occasions without giving any understandable reasons. The case of the writer Dennis Cooper , whose blog denniscooper-theweaklings.blogspot.com , widely known as DC’s or The Weaklings , has been set up since 2006 and is known as DC’s or The Weaklings , on June 27, 2016 with reference to an alleged violation of the terms of use and without specifying, became particularly well known other reasons has been deleted. Attempts by the author to reactivate or to find out more precise reasons were unsuccessful. This process met with widespread criticism in the media. Suzanne Nossel, the director of the US PEN , also expressed the organization's concern about the approach of blogspot.com in a press release :

"Disabling Dennis Cooper's blog with no explanation and no assurance that his years of work have been preserved undercuts the trust that users place in online platforms that host their work and ideas."

"The deactivation of Dennis Cooper's blog without explanation and without assurance that the results of his years of work will not be lost undermines the trust that users place in online services that they use to make their work and ideas available."
