Bobby Lee Rush (born November 23, 1946 in Albany , Georgia ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He has been a member of the United States House of Representatives since 1993, representing the state of Illinois .

Career

Bobby Rush served in the US Army from 1963 to 1968 . He studied at Roosevelt University in Chicago , where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1974 . From 1983 to 1993 he was a member of the city ​​council of Chicago. In 1999 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of mayor of that city. He also attended the University of Illinois and the McCormick Theological Seminary . Rush meanwhile also worked as an insurance agent. In addition, he is or was occasionally active as a clergyman. In Illinois, he co-founded and then became an official of the Black Panther Party in the 1960s . In terms of federal politics, he joined the Democratic Party. In 1990 he was its vice president for Illinois. In 1992 he was elected to the US House of Representatives. As a member of this body since January 3, 1993, Rush has represented the first Congressional constituency of his state. In 2000, the future US President Barack Obama - at that time a member of the Illinois Senate - unsuccessfully challenged his congress seat within the party: Rush clearly won the Democratic primary with 61 percent of the vote. After being confirmed in office in all elections so far, including the 2016 election, Rush can continue to exercise his mandate in Congress to this day. His term of office is expected to run until January 3, 2019, with the option to run for another candidate in 2018.

He is a member of the Committee for Energy and Trade and is the highest-ranking Democrat ( Ranking Member ) in the Subcommittee on Energy and Power .
