Bogolan (mud cloth, made with mud) is the product of an African weaving and dyeing technique that is originally from Mali .

Bogolan are roughly structured and hand-woven cotton strips that are about ten to 15 centimeters wide and are sewn together. Traditionally, the cotton strips are woven by men.

The ornate patterns are made by women by repeatedly applying mud and sap made from both leaves and tree bark. The dyeing process is extremely time consuming, which makes the product a very desirable item. Bogolan has become an internationally recognized symbol of the African style.
