Bojan Kurajica (born November 15, 1947 in Ljubljana , Yugoslavia ) is a Croatian-Bosnian chess master .

Life

Kurajica, who lived in Split for many years , surprisingly won the Junior World Championship in Barcelona in 1965, ahead of favorites like Robert Huebner . In the same year he was named International Master . In 1967 he was third in Hastings behind ex-world champions Michail Botwinnik and Wolfgang Uhlmann . In 1974 he finished third in Solingen with ex-world champion Boris Spasski behind Lev Polugajewski and Lubomir Kavalek . Because of these successes, FIDE awarded Kurajica the title of Grand Master in the same year . Kurajica was one of the first foreign chess professionals in the German team championship in the 1970s , where he played for the Solingen SG in 1868 .

Kurajica now lives in Spain.

National team

Kurajica represented Yugoslavia at the 1980 Chess Olympiad in Malta , where he won bronze with his team, and in 1984 in Thessaloniki . He represented Bosnia and Herzegovina since the Chess Olympiad in 1992 eight times until 2006 . At the 1994 Chess Olympiad in Moscow he was one of the pillars of the surprising silver medal win with a result of 9 out of 13 (+6 = 6 −1). Since June 2006 he played for the Croatian Chess Federation, in March 2009 he switched back to the Bosnian Chess Federation. Kurajica has been registered for the Croatian Association again since June 2018. At the 2010 and 2012 Chess Olympiads , he played again for Bosnia and Herzegovina. Kurajica also took part in the European Team Championships in 1970, 1980 and 1983 for Yugoslavia, 1992, 1997, 1999 and 2003 for Bosnia and Herzegovina. His greatest success was second place with the Yugoslav team in 1983 in Plovdiv .

In the Bosnian Premier League, Kurajica played for ŠK Bosna Sarajevo until 2006 , with whom he became Bosnian team champion in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006, in 2008 for HŠK Napredak Sarajevo , and from 2009 to 2011 for ŠK Bihać , with whom he 2010 became champion, and from 2012 to 2014 for the ŠK Široki Brijeg , with which he became champion in 2012 and 2014. In 2015 he won the title again with the ŠK Bosna Sarajevo . He won the European Club Cup in 1976 with the Solingen SG in 1868 and in 1994, 1999 and 2000 with the ŠK Bosna Sarajevo . In the Spanish team championship he played in 2007 for CA La Caja Las Palmas .
