There is the so-called “shoe box” calculator, which is roughly the size of a shoe box because of its dimensions . This offers space for one or two standard PC plug-in cards . As a further variant, there are computers in which at least one side is made very flat and a flat display can be attached directly . The panel PC then results from the combination . As a third variant, there is box PC, which can be operated both without a fan and without a hard drive . The waste heat is released through a large heat sink integrated into the housing . Compact Flash systems are used as mass storage devices . These box PCs are often similar to an audio output stage in a vehicle.

The high level of industrial suitability is characterized by high vibration / shock loads during operation, high temperature application range, high service friendliness, pronounced diagnostics, continuous operation and, in some cases, operation without a fan or hard drive, e.g. B. through the use of industrial grade compact flash cards.
