Brown berets

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Brown Berets were a social revolutionary group from Chicano in the United States in the late 1960s.

The Brown Berets were founded in 1967 by Mexican migrants and followed the example of the Black Panther Party . The main activity was the fight against racism and police violence but also for justice in education, housing and social benefits. In 1969 there were 29 chapters, mostly in California, but also in Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico , Texas, and Washington.

In late 1969, the Brown Barets formed a Chicano Moratorium Committee. This organized regular protest marches to protest against the Vietnam War and for the fallen soldiers from Chicago or to commemorate them. The committee later called for demonstrations not only against the war, but also against police violence . A protest rally in 1970 in Los Angeles became one of the largest anti-war protests in the United States, with nearly 20,000 participants. The police stepped in and there were numerous attacks by officials against demonstrators; while the Chicago journalist Ruben Salazar (1928-1970) was killed.
