Crusty

Crush , also melt crust , refers to a snow surface that thaws after being heated, for example by direct sunlight, and then solidified again by cooling, usually at night. Under the surface ice crust, the snow is dry and powdery. The formation of crust is also called melt transformation .

This hard cover has a very different load-bearing capacity, depending on its thickness, which makes skiing very difficult: For example, you sink in when you compress a curve, whereas the crust wears between the turns.

If the snow cover is completely dampened by warming or rain, one speaks of sulz snow or firn .
