Book of Rites
The Book of Rites ( Chinese 禮記 / 礼记 , Pinyin Lǐjì or 小 戴 禮記 / 小 戴 礼记 , Xiǎodài Lǐjì ) is one of the five classics that are ascribed to Confucius .
It describes social behavior and court ceremonies (the Confucian rites ).
The Book of Rites is the largest of the canonical books. It was only created after Confucius and in some cases can be dated to the second century BC, parts are traced back to students of Confucius (according to the bibliography in Hanshu 漢書 · 藝文志 / 汉书 · 艺文志 ). It deals with the rules of etiquette , manners and customs, for example for the cult of ancestors and for behavior at court. The reference to the “rites”, or rather “customs” ( 禮 / 礼 ), or the “record of the rites (customs)” ( 禮記 / 礼记 ) does not necessarily have to refer to the book of rites in older texts , but can also designate earlier texts and collections of texts - the reference is then often unclear.
