A federal university or federal university is a university that is not supported by one of the federal states, but directly by the German state. They are an exception insofar as higher education legislation is basically a matter for the federal states according to the Basic Law. Such universities also count from federal universities if they carry out teaching in accordance with state regulations. The Federal Armed Forces University in Munich is one of the federal universities .
