The pleated trousers are men's or women's trousers with folds attached to the front waistband . As a result, the hip and buttocks area is cut wider. Usually there are two to four ironed-in pleats below the waistband . More rarely there are pleats on the back.

Pleats are folds in the front trousers that begin in the waistband seam and are created when the front trousers are tucked in to a certain depth before sewing on.

The pleats create more freedom of movement and a more generous width. Depending on the type of pleats, both a moderate and a lush width can be produced. Depending on the cut of the trouser leg, the trousers retain their generous width up to the hem or tapers again conically towards the ankle. In the latter case, one speaks of carrot pants . Pleated trousers with a carrot cut can have their greatest width in the hip area or in the thigh area.

Other features of pleated trousers are often higher body heights and an implied carrot shape.

In men's fashion, pleated trousers have established themselves as fashionable trousers since the late 1970s.
