Burgus from Mittelstrimmig

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Burgus von Mittelstrimmig is a late Roman fortification ( burgus ) in Mittelstrimmig , district of Cochem-Zell. The burgus is near the vicus of Mittelstrimmig and a Roman road.

Building inscription

In 1908 an inscription was found in the district of Liesenich in the district "on the wall", which is attached to three stone blocks. The middle part, a limestone, is a spoil , which from its first use probably bears an inscription of a temple dedication. The (incomplete) building inscription of the burgus can be found on the back and the two red sandstone blocks on the side .

"Qui burgum (a) edificaverunt Lup (ulinius) Am / minus pr (a) efectus Sab (inius) Acceptio Vid (ucius) / Perpetu (u) s Fl (a) v (ius) Tasgillus CO () Lepidus / Min ( ucius) Luppus cum C (a) es (ius) Ursulus paratus / est Victorino Augusto et / Sa (n) cto co (n) s (ulibus) X Kal (endas) Iunias "

It is particularly interesting that the name of a fortification as a burgus is given by an archaeological find. In addition to the builders, Victorinus , one of the emperors of the Imperium Galliarum and his fellow consul Sa (n) ctus are also mentioned here . The inscription above offers an exact date of May 23rd. Older research names 268 or 269 as the year of construction, while more recent literature favors the year 270.

Fortification

The burgus itself could not be located and described until almost a century later with the help of a magnetometer survey. A rectangular inner building with an extension of 13 × 18 m can be seen, which is surrounded by a square enclosure with rounded corners with two trenches. This type of construction is also observed in other burgi , the central building can be interpreted as a tower.

Hoard finds

Two hoard finds were excavated near the fortification in 2011. A depot with bronze vessels and ceramic vessels with more than 25,000 bronze coins from the Constantinian era were discovered.
